mixed media (ink, vellum, paper, glue)

k.m. moved to austin a couple of years ago. she became immediately active in both the austin arts scene, as well as many social justice movements. one thing that struck me immediately after meeting k.m. was how positive and optimistic she is. she is also a visionary--continuously supporting her friends and thier work while also developing a queer-positive, independent media empire. she is a filmmaker, with a wry wit and acute observational eye. at the same time, i have heard k.m. tell me many stories of extreme adversity, where she has had to fight to survive. something about her will to survive inspired this piece. i was also in the throes of quitting my day job at the time, when i was feeling like everything around me was falling apart. it was interesting to me that i had made such an angry piece for someone who is always so positive. at the same time, k.m.'s positivity comes from a deep place of struggle, and i believe, rage. i hope that we will continue to work and play together--gathering strength, inspiration, and love from our rage.
