k.c. is currently a nurse and i haven't seen her for years, even though we email off and on. i'm very certain that she is probably still making art when she isn't saving lives. when we went to school together, i have many memories of her holding some creative instrument, like a crochet needle, or a camera. she once did a series of portraits on mixed-race people. she asked me to be one of her subjects. i gladly accepted. at the end of the semester, when her photography class displayed their work in the student union, i eagerly looked for her work. at first, i couldn't find it, because i was just looking for a picture of my face. then, upon close look, i found her pieces. they were these lovely large pieces where she had woven a photograph of my face with an image of a buddhist icon. the weave was very intricate and the effect was stunning. i have since used the same technique in some of my book art, and some of my students have used it as well. this piece is an homage to k.c. and her virtuosic use of that technique. i hope that she is still making things.
