india ink on judy green manuscript paper

j.b. is a very talented trombonist who i have known for almost 10 years now. she is still active as a performer. when i went to school with j.b. she commissioned a solo trombone piece from me. j.b. was very patient and showed me many "extended techniques"--i.e. unorthodox ways of using the instrument. it opened up my eyes to trombone as a versatile instrument. since then, i have written a few more pieces for trombone and i have enjoyed it immensely. when i created this piece, i remembered her patience and her virtuosic ability. my main limitation was the 5"X7" size of the piece. this lead to using repetition as a main tool. the title, "reset" refers to a meditative approach to the sounds. it is basically an etude on some common extended techniques, and i thought that it could serve as a kind of mental "clearing of the pallette" for both performer and audience. i hope that j.b. will perform it at a gig some day.
