h.j. was took a class with me last semester. the course was on the relationship between asian american cultural identity and art. i was very fond of the students in that class. many of them engaged in the topics and techniques very earnestly. h.j. was one of those students. for her final project, she decided to tackle acrylic paint to create an image of the "stereotypical asian man." she drew heavy influence from roger shimomura. even though the medium was very new for her, her final outcome was very successful. i used a new medium for me, inks, to tackle a similar subject. i drew this imae from the many historical images about "coolies."
