c.s. was a student of mine last semester. i have known her for a couple of years. she is very bright and grasps theories very well. for her final project in my class, she decided to explore dada-ist techniques while also critiquing assimilation and yellowface. she ended up "retexting" a poster of audrey hepburn from "breakfast at tiffany's." my main critique as she worked on the piece was that it needed to be "uglier." at every step, i told her, "dadaism would dictate this to be more ugly that that." when i thought about what to creat for c.s. i wanted to used found objects. i wanted it to be personal, but scientific. at the same time, i was considering what to do for k.s., who is a friend of c.s. i decided to do a diptych for the two of them. i proceeded to create a collage of what i did on the day i made this piece, january 9, 2007.
