calligraphy ink on paper

c.d. is a teacher and an artist. although i've known her for a couple of years now, i only recently found out that she draws lovely pictures that involve armadillos. when i sat down to create her piece, i considered creating various drawings, etc. however, i then remembered the many conversations we had about japan. c.d. lived in japan for a year on the jet program (a government-sponsored programs for americans to teach english in japan). c.d. has always seemed very fond of japan. earlier this month, i had found my mother's calligraphy stone and brushes. i have since been a bit obsessed with them. i decided to create this calligraphy for c.d. as a reminder of her time in japan. the main character, "kokoro," means something close to "heart/emotions/soul/feeling." one of the canonic pieces of literature by natsume soseki is called "kokoro." if you want to learn about what the character really means, i would recommend reading it. the two characters to the left make up my middle/japanese name, terumi. since c.d. has always struck me as a very soulful and thoughtful person, this was the only character that came to my mind when thinking of her.
