a.s. is a dancer who i first met socially. she is unassuming and generous. it is perhaps because of this that i have never managed to see her perform live. it seems that she doesn't like to ask her friends to come to things, so i often end up hearing about shows too late to be able to see them. i hope this changes soon. i did ask her to guest teach a class of mine once, and i was inspired by her approach to dancing and her body. even though she is appropriately nimble and body-conscious as dancers tend to be, she was refreshingly down to earth about how she approached the body and how she taught the students in my class to approach theirs. it is because of this memory of her teaching about the body that i decided to create this piece. i wanted to make the figure minimal, elemental. i added the chinese character of "body"--more the equivalent to the latin, corpus--
