a.s. is an amazing poet and activist. even before i moved to austin, i knew about her and was anxious to meet her. she is also a multi-disciplinary artist, who explores new mediums all the time. both her poetry and her art often focus on sensuality in the every day. i remember when she read a poem that was to her lover, it made all the women in the audience swoon. this piece was one of those pieces that came to me very quickly. i recall a.s. declaring how much she loves poetry. i thought about writing her a haiku. the thing that not many folks know about haiku is that in its traditional form, it must have some reference to the seasons, not just the 5-7-5 syllabic structure. so i heard this haiku in my head as i left an evening class i taught last fall. i knew that it was for a.s. and as i wrote out the words in my notebook, i knew it needed to accompany some type of image. this watercolor piece was one of the first where i really felt like i understood some of the natural tendencies of the paint. my hope is that a.s. can save it for a rainy (or even cold) day.
